Seigen and Immunity

Synopsis: Because health begin in the intestines environment, it is extremely important to supply the intestinal the billions of friendly bacteria which are essential to and good for health maintenance and enjoyment of optimum quality of life.

Basis of Health and Longevity
In recent years nutritional scientists have focused more than ever before on the microbiological basis of health and longevity. The rapidly expanding volume of health related books and periodical literature that report the latest research on prebiotics, probiotics, symbiotics, biofermentics and related subjects demands attention.

More than four times the number of human clinical trials on probiotics were published during the period from 2001 to 2005 than during the previous five years. More researchers are delving deeply into the mysterious and highly complex world of microbiota – the tiny living things that we refer to as beneficial bacteria.

They inhabit the intestinal tract and largely determine the issues of life for every human on Planet Earth. Scientific Goal
A major goal of Japanese scientists in developing the four varieties of Seigen was to discover a modality for enhancement of the human immune system. The risk of health challenges increases with immune suppression factors and with age. It is extremely important to maintain immunity at a sufficient level to protect against challenges to health at all stages of life.

Biofermentics (the science of fermenting certain food products using scientifically selected friendly bacteria) is one important pathway for accomplishing maintenance and enhancement of the immune power of the body. The main component that enhances immunity is the Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) that is a major part of the biofermentics process.

Special strains are selected on the basis that they work synergistically to produce the most powerful immunity among a great number of variant strains of LAB. The selected friendly bacteria are cultivated in pure culture and in great volume prior to introduction to the intestinal tract.

Bacteria and Immunity
The Russian biologist, Dr. Ilya Mechnikov (1845-1916), who won the Nobel Prize in 1908 for his studies on natural immunity, proposed the hypothesis that "the lactobacilli contained in yogurt inhibits non beneficial bacteria, thus limiting the production of toxins."

However, it was demonstrated by later studies that the lactobacilli contained in yogurt were not able to proliferate and inhabit the intestinal tract to any large extent because they are unable to survive stomach acids. Thus they could not adequately populate the small and large intestines. Therefore Dr. Mechnikov's theory became outdated and buried in oblivion.

Recently his "lactobacilli therapy," suggesting that ingestion of lactobacilli provides insusceptibility to health challenges and "improves health and longevity," is again coming into focus and being recognized as credible. Mechnikov's theory and study on the intestinal microflora suggests that Lactic Acid Bacteria play an important role in the maintenance of health.

Recent studies have shown that consumption of LAB is able to confer a wide range of health benefits including enhancement of immunity. Fortunately, the nutritional scientists who created Seigen solved the problem of stomach acids neutralizing lactobacilli and produced a remarkable product that delivers the lactobacilli direct to the small and large intestines.

Key Role of Intestinal Microflora
There are hundreds of different kinds of bacteria inhabiting the intestines, numbering collectively over one hundred trillion individual organisms, and constituting the intestinal microflora. They play an important role in relation to our health with reference to immunity, nutrition, infection and aging.

These microorganisms can be divided into beneficial bacteria and non beneficial bacteria. The beneficial ones are mainly lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, and the non beneficial ones are known as Welch's bacilli. It is desirable that the intestinal population of the beneficial bacteria exceeds that of the contrary bacteria.

If the relationships are disturbed and non beneficial bacteria become predominant, the consequences may be very serious. The increase in production of putrefaction can cause toxins to overload the liver and other organs. The natural powers of detoxification are impaired, immune powers are weakened, one or more challenges to health may develop, and the aging process can accelerate unchecked.

Most health challenges begin in the intestinal tract, and counteraction must begin in the intestinal tract. Maximization and maintenance of intestinal health is the foundation for nourishing and balancing all body systems, assuring optimal general health and longevity of life.
